Talking To A City Planner

Updated: Feb 13, 2020

Now that we’ve worked through the ADU Universal Checklist and have a number of questions that need to be addressed we can drop by the Permit Center at City Hall for a free consultation with a city planner.

The planner will help us understand what our ADU plans should address and include to comply with the Zoning Code.

Here’s what you need to bring to the consultation:

1. Your copy of the ADU Universal Checklist with all questions answered

2. A rough site plan (maybe hand-drawn) that shows:

  • Lot boundaries and dimensions

  • Location of the primary dwelling unit

  • Location of the proposed ADU.

An example of a site plan requirement drawing can be found at the following link:

To meet with a planner, go to the Permit Center, 1st floor, City Hall. Note, you do not need an appointment, this is a drop-in service.

If you come by car, validated parking is available in the Tower garage located on 6th Street.

Once you arrive go to the Permit Center kiosk to obtain a ticket to meet with a planner. At the kiosk tap the "Planning Services" button, then the "ADU Questions" button. Take the ticket and when your number is called, go to the round Assistance Desk.

Now I just need to draw up my site plan and since I live downtown, take a walk down to City Hall.

FYI, the Permit Center is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.Wednesday: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
