Ah, permits.
A permit for this and permit for that
For schools and parks and a cat in the hat . . .
Ok enough of Dr. Seuss, what's the cost of permitting an ADU in San Jose?
The size of your ADU will determine your building permit fees. See the Building Fee page for fee information. In addition to the building permit fee the City requires ADU Applicants to pay:
School Fees - As of Jan. 1, 2020, school impact fees will no longer apply to ADUs less than 750 sq. ft. Parkland Impact Fees - As of Jan. 1, 2020, parkland impact fees will no longer apply to ADUs less than 750 sq. ft. Any fees for other processes as may be needed:
Fortunately, the City provides a free Permit Cost Estimate. You can get this estimate by completing Form 337-Permit Cost Estimate Worksheet.
The form can be emailed, taken to the Development Services Permit Center staff at City Hall or mailed.
So I filled out the form and mailed it to Terri Batin and terri.batin@sanjoseca.gov and received this quick email reply:

So this free permit cost estimate is somewhat helpful but there's a long way to go to figure out the total permit cost.
