So we've talked about finding an architect, preferable one that has a collection of ADU plans, but even with the plans, you'll need a contractor. And certainly, there are reputable contractors that will cost you $500 per sq ft to build your ADU.
Here's a list:
Note all these builders are located in Northern California and certainly will charge you a premium but you get what you pay for as the saying goes.
But at $500 per sq ft to build an ADU using these types of contractors makes and ADU unaffordable, at least for the masses.
To lower the cost you really have to be your own contractor, which is certainly doable if you have the time and patience. I've had a number of friends who were their own contractors, one for an addition and the other for a house he built from the ground up. Neither of these friends knew a lick about construction when they started these projects but no doubt learn as they went along and got their projects built.
So what do you need to know to be your own contractor? On to part III!
